How to Choose a Link Building Service When AI Overviews Decide Who Gets Seen

Most link building services still sell the product that worked in 2019: a fixed number of links a month and a promise to push your Domain Rating up. AI search changed what those links are for. Google's AI Overviews and ChatGPT decide which brands get named in the answer, and the research on what they reward points somewhere different from the average vendor's price list. Here is how to tell a link building service that fits 2026 from one that is selling you the past.

Quick answer: Hire a link building service on what AI search actually rewards, not on link counts. Ahrefs found branded web mentions correlate three times more strongly with AI Overview visibility than raw backlink numbers (0.664 vs 0.218). So demand relevant editorial placements, brand mentions and list inclusions, and walk away from anyone guaranteeing link volume.

Yes - but mostly because AI Overviews quote pages that already rank. Ahrefs analyzed 1.9 million citations from 1 million AI Overviews and found that 76.1% of cited pages also rank in Google's top 10, with the first citation typically coming from the page in position 2. Other analyses put the share as high as 92% - the exact figure depends on the dataset, but the direction is consistent. Links still help you rank, and ranking is still the main road into the answer box.

That is the part of old-school link building that survived. What didn't survive is the idea that links are the goal. The same study found 14.4% of cited pages don't rank in the top 100 at all, so Google is also pulling sources for other reasons - and the research on those reasons is where most link building services fall behind. If you want the bigger picture of how search and AI answers now fit together, start with our GEO vs SEO breakdown.

AI search rewards being talked about, not just being linked to. In Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands, the factor most strongly linked to AI Overview visibility was branded web mentions, at 0.664 - three times the strength of raw backlink count, at 0.218.

The full ranking tells the same story. Signals that show people know your brand beat signals that only count links:

Factor (Ahrefs, 75K brands)Correlation with AI Overview visibility
Branded web mentions0.664
Branded anchors0.527
Branded search volume0.392
Domain Rating0.326
Number of referring domains0.295
Number of backlinks0.218

Two more findings should change what you buy. First, the gap between the most-mentioned brands and everyone else is steep: Ahrefs reported that brands in the top 25% for web mentions average 169 AI Overview mentions, more than 10 times the next quartile down. Second, the follow/nofollow split that many vendors still price around barely registers. Semrush's 2025 study of 1,000 domains across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews found nofollow links correlated with AI visibility just as strongly as followed links - 0.340 versus 0.334.

Authority hasn't stopped mattering. Semrush also found its Authority Score correlated 0.65 with AI mentions. The point is that authority comes from being a brand the web keeps referencing - not from a monthly quota of links.

Walk away from any vendor whose promise is a number they can't control. The research above makes most of the classic sales pitches either irrelevant or misleading:

  1. "We guarantee 20 links a month": Link count is the weakest signal in Ahrefs' data (0.218). A quota rewards the vendor for volume, which pushes them toward the cheapest placements they can find.
  2. "We'll raise your Domain Rating": DR is a third-party metric, not something Google or ChatGPT uses, and it correlated at only 0.326 with AI Overview visibility.
  3. "Dofollow links only": Semrush found nofollow and followed links correlate almost identically with AI visibility. Paying a premium for the attribute is paying for 2015.
  4. "Guaranteed AI Overview citations": Nobody controls which sources Google picks for a query. Treat this as a sign the vendor doesn't understand the product.
  5. No list of target sites before you pay: If you can't see where your brand will appear, you can't check whether those sites are relevant or real. Private blog networks hide here.
  6. Exact-match anchor text on every link: Ahrefs found branded anchors correlate at 0.527 with AI Overview visibility. Links that name your brand look like real recommendations; keyword-stuffed anchors look like what they are.

A good service delivers placements that make your brand part of the conversation in your industry - and reports on mentions, not just links. In practice that means four things:

  • Editorial links on pages people read: Links inside articles on relevant sites that rank and get traffic. A link from a page nobody visits does nothing for rankings or for AI answers.
  • Brand mentions, linked or not: Coverage where your brand is named as an example, a source or a recommendation. Given that branded web mentions were the strongest factor in Ahrefs' data, a vendor who ignores unlinked mentions is ignoring the biggest lever.
  • Inclusion in "best X" lists: In Ahrefs' study of 26,283 source URLs behind 750 ChatGPT prompts, "best X" list articles made up 43.8% of all cited pages. Getting your brand onto the lists that already rank for your category is one of the most direct routes into AI answers.
  • Assets worth citing: Original data, expert commentary and research that journalists and bloggers reference on their own. This is where link building and digital PR merge - we covered that shift in Digital PR Is the New Link Building.

Two details from the "best X" research are worth passing to any vendor. 79.1% of the cited lists had been updated in 2025, so a placement in a list that never gets refreshed may fade. And 35% of cited lists sat on low-authority domains - relevance to the query mattered more than the site's DR.

Vet an agency on evidence you can check yourself, not on the sales deck. Run through these steps before you sign anything:

  1. Ask for a sample report: Real URLs, anchor texts, publish dates and the pages' traffic. A vendor that can't show past placements is asking you to pay blind.
  2. Check the placements in an SEO tool: Do the linking pages rank for anything? Do the sites cover your industry? Five relevant pages beat fifty irrelevant ones.
  3. Ask what they measure besides links: Listen for brand mentions, list inclusions and AI visibility - mention rate and citation share across a fixed set of prompts. If you're not sure what to ask for, our guide to AI search KPIs lists the metrics that matter now.
  4. Test their own visibility: Ask ChatGPT and Google for link building agencies in your market and see who comes up. It's not a hard rule - good agencies often live on referrals - but a vendor selling AI visibility should understand how it works for them.
  5. Read the contract for quotas and lock-ins: Pricing per link and long minimum terms both reward volume. Prefer scopes built around placements you approve and outcomes you can see.

Should you hire a service at all?

Only if they sell influence, not inventory. The best link building in 2026 looks a lot like good PR: earning mentions in places your buyers and the AI engines already read. That work compounds, because every mention makes the next one easier. Monthly link quotas don't compound - they just renew.

If you'd rather have one team handle it, link building and digital PR are part of what we do - built around placements you approve and mentions you can measure, not a link count.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, if the placement is relevant and the page gets read. Semrush's 2025 study of 1,000 domains found the number of nofollow links correlated with AI visibility just as strongly as followed links (0.340 vs 0.334). A vendor that only counts dofollow links is measuring the wrong thing.

No. Ahrefs found Domain Rating correlates with AI Overview visibility at 0.326, about half the strength of branded web mentions (0.664). In a separate Ahrefs study, 35% of the "best X" lists that ChatGPT cited sat on low-authority domains. Relevance and real readership beat a high DR number.

No one can. Google chooses citations per query, and while Ahrefs found 76.1% of cited pages rank in the top 10, 14.4% of cited pages don't rank at all. Any vendor promising guaranteed AI citations, a guaranteed link count or a guaranteed DR increase is promising something they don't control.

The data says they matter a lot. In Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions were the factor most strongly linked to AI Overview visibility (0.664), well ahead of backlink count (0.218). A good service should report mentions it earned, not only links.
